Skin Purging

Skin Purging - Hey Honey Beauty

Hey Honey, we’ve all been there, you start a new skincare product with high hopes and then suddenly, your skin is covered in more blemishes than it had before. This could mean one of two things; your skin isn’t reacting well to the product or the product is doing its job and purging is occurring.

So, what exactly is purging? When starting a new product, your skin must first adjust. Meaning it may get worse before it gets better. On the other hand, a reaction is when your skin is irritated or allergic to a product.

Dermatologists say purging occurs because a blemish doesn’t begin when it appears on the skin's surface. It starts as a clogged pore that eventually becomes a pimple. A new skincare product will hopefully speed up the process meaning all the clogged pores will come up quickly and then die down. These pimples would have come up eventually regardless, the new product just accelerates the cycle of cleansing your pores.

Purging is common in products for acne, acne medications, and scrubs. Basic moisturizers or cleansers don’t usually cause purging, so if you are experiencing irritation it is most likely a reaction. Breaking out in new areas is also most likely a reaction because purging simply brings pre-existing acne to the surface.

A great tip is to spot test a small amount of product on the inside of your wrist. The skin in that area is extremely sensitive and will give you a quick answer of whether or not you will have a negative reaction to the product when using it on a larger area like your face.

Skin renews itself frequently, so if the new product isn’t improving your skin after around 1-2 weeks, it’s most likely not the right fit for you.

Finding the right skincare products doesn’t have to be a chore. Listen to what your body is telling you and you are on your way to the perfect match, honey!
